Unfolding Kaitiakitanga: Shifting the institutional space with biculturalism.

This publication is one outcome of the exhibition Since 1984: He aha te ahurea-rua?, curated by Martin Awa Clarke Langdon and held at ST PAUL St in 2015. In this exhibition biculturalism, from the perspective of his generation – who he refers to as the ‘kōhanga reo generation’ – was the focus.

For her contribution to Since 1984: He aha te ahurea-rua? Elisapeta Heta facilitated a wānanga in the gallery space. The wānanga or Noho Symposium sat within the framing of the exhibition, considering the contemporary context of biculturalism in Aotearoa New Zealand, but it also expanded that frame, to include multiple participants, a concentrated period of time outside of regular gallery hours. The exhibition made space for this expansion. In that sense it was both the exhibition and Noho that generated the series of subsequent discussions and texts brought together in this book.
