ST PAUL St is proud to present an exhibition of South Africa based photographer Roger Ballen. Roger Ballen (born 1950, New York City, resides in Johannesburg, South Africa) is an artist whose oeuvre is one of the most singular and searingly intense in art today. Presenting photographs from Shadow Chamber, 2000 - 2004; Outland, 1995 -2001; and Platteland, 1983 -1994; as well as his most recent series Boarding House, 2005 - 2008; this exhibition will explore the depth and nuances of Roger Ballen’s practice as it consistently strikes at the heart of what it means to be a human animal, driven by a range of fitful and barely understood forces. Unsettling, beautiful, tender and often brutal, the work of Roger Ballen doesn’t leave anybody untouched.

Roger Ballen has been included in the Berlin Biennial and the Milan Triennale and has held numerous solo exhibitions in prominent art institutions around the world, including the State Museum of Russia, St. Petersburg, the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.

Roger Ballen is represented by Stills Gallery, Sydney, Australia. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Auckland Festival of Photography.
